Gender Equality Committee
The Gender Equality Committee (GEC) of the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) was established in September of 2002. The Committee aims to help make a real gender equivalent society in the field of chemical science and engineering. The realization of a research environment where men and women can play significant roles by displaying their individuality is desired.
The Chemical Society of Japan is one of the three founding societies of the "Japan Inter-Society Liaison Association Committee for Promoting Equal Participation of Men and Women in Science and Engineering" (EPMEWSE), consisting of 42 academic and 26 cooperative societies. The EPMEWSE expands our activities and enhances information exchange. The GEC of the Chemical Society of Japan is one of the leading members of the EPMEWSE.

Activity
The GEC recommended that board of directors of CSJ increase the ratio of women members both on the board and committees at CSJ up to 20% before 2010. Upon this recommendation, each committee has become more concerned with inviting women members, however only one woman sits on the board of directors in 2011 (3%).
The symposium of the GEC has been held at the Annual Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan every March from 2002. The GEC symposiums contribute to encourage women chemists and all members of the CSJ.

Recent Activity
The GEC of the Chemical Society of Japan celebrated the International Womenfs Networking Event of the IYC (Year of Chemistry) on January 18, 2011 with around 35 countries. The key aim was to discuss the promotion and networking of young chemists with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Marie Curiefs Nobel Prize in chemistry, and also two Japanese Nobel laureates, Prof. E. Negishi and Prof. A. Suzuki, who were awarded the Nobel in chemistry 2010 for developing palladium catalyzed cross-coupling.
